Helston Fire Station has bid farewell to its station manager as he retires after 25 years in service, handing the baton to a long-term friend and colleague.

At a leaving send-off at the station on Monday Dale Reardon was joined by his family, friends, and crew mates, old and new to celebrate his time in service, after joining in 1998.

Dale, who is Helston born and bred, joined the crew at the old fire station which was based on Trengrouse Way before moving to the new site on Redruth Road in 2003. After working his way up through the ranks, Dale was then made station manager 18 months ago

Throughout his career, Dale has travelled to various incidents in Helston and throughout Cornwall, where he has put out fires and helped people and animals.

However, there was one type of call-out he enjoyed the most. Dale said: “Being called out to gorse fires in the middle of the night and watching the sunrise.

“Although it was hard work, watching the sun come up was rewarding.”

After his send-off on Monday, Dale said: “It was a good turnout, all the family were there.

“It has been a big commitment, not just for me, but for them as well, being on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Stepping into Dale’s shoes is current watch manager, Mark Skinner.

Mark and Dale have worked alongside one another for 18 years and have laughed and cried together throughout their time working together and have become good friends.

Dale said: "I want to wish Mark well for the future, Helston is in good hands."

Mark spoke of his admiration for Dale. He said: “I will miss working with Dale, it will be a massive loss to the station.

“He’s a very clever and talented chap. We all wish him well."
