A BELOW-par performance from Wendron was followed by the news that St. Blazey had won 3-0, at St. Dennis and replaced Wendron at the top of the South West Peninsula League (West), writes Joss Bray.
In order to reach the Senior Cup Final and a local derby against Helston AFC, the Wendron team had to overcome the considerable hurdle of Western League Millbrook.
It took Wendron some time to adjust to the opposition and impose their own style.
They did, however, create the first chance, when Charlie Young found Josh Wood, whose cross to the far post was volleyed just wide by Ryan Reeve.
A good move down the left by Millbrook resulted in a cross and a shot, blocked by Reece Carroll, for a corner.
The tall Millbrook defenders, who came up for every corner, posed plenty of problems but it was Kieran O'Melia on the left wing who was the main danger with his probing balls into the box.
On 20 minutes the ball broke in the area and Millbrook took the lead when Jake Foster's shot into the corner found the net, despite the best efforts of keeper Ethan Fearn who got a hand to the ball.
Wendron was then presented with a chance when a clearance by the Millbrook keeper was blocked and fell to Jack Stocker, whose shot from distance fell just the wrong side of the post.
A good cross by Stocker was then headed over by Charlie Young before the busy Reece Carroll cut in from the left and struck a right-footed shot toward the far corner of the goal, but it was well saved by the keeper.
With Millbrook always dangerous on the counter-attack they went into the interval 1-0 up.
In the second half, Wendron began to impose their passing game and had more of the play, though Millbrook threatened on the break.
On 60 minutes Wendron brought on Cameron Quirke and the sub immediately sent a powerful shot just wide.
A break by Millbrook ended with a near miss but Wendron responded when Young's shot went just past the post.
Then, on 80 minutes, disaster struck as Millbrook went 2-0 up.
A run and cross from Josh Toulson resulted in Kieron O'Melia's short-range volley being brilliantly kept out by Fearn but, unfortunately, the ball dropped back to the same player for a tap-in.
Wendron never gave up and the closest they came to reducing the arrears was when substitute Joe Chapman rode two challenges but his powerful shot cleared the bar.
Wendron have three remaining league games against Mullion, St. Blazey, and Callington.
