THERE was a big crowd at Mawnan Football Club to see the annual Andrew Morris memorial match which took place to raise funds for the Man Down mental health charity, writes Leon Prynn.
A real mixture of ages formed Mawnan’s side, managed by Wayne Hughes, and the visiting team, managed by Penryn Rugby Club’s Marek Churcher, consisted mainly of rugby players who turned out in a battle to win the Kinsey Memorial Cup. Kinsey was Andy’s nickname.
The game was won by the footballers 6-3, but the goal of the game was the first with Ben Waters scoring with a terrific 25-yard shot. Chris Cole and the effervescent Ollie Miller scored the other goals, whilst Mawnan netted through Dom Pullen (3), Paul Webb and Tim Pointon, with a pentalty from Kevin Bate.
Speaking after the match, Mr Churcher said: “It was a brilliant day. There was a great crowd and the match was a pleasure to take part in, but most of all it allowed all of Andy’s friends to come together and remember him along with those of Jamie and Martin.”
Mr Hughes added: “Before the game got under way the two sides toasted the memory of Andy Morris along with Jamie Gray and Martin Day, who sadly also lost their lives in recent years. Before the game got under way the players and the spectators paid a fitting tribute to all three players with a minute’s silence.”
It was later confirmed that £500 had been raised for the Man Down charity.
