Cornwall's MPs and parliamentary candidates have reacted to the government's latest planned changes for second homes.

Both Steve Double MP and Scott Mann MP posted statements online regarding the government's latest proposals which will reportedly give councils control over the number of properties used for this purpose. 

Cornwall Council has also urged residents to share their views on the plans by engage with two consultations that are being launched.

In a statement posted on his social media profile, Scott Mann MP said: "Having campaigned vigorously on our housing challenges, I am absolutely delighted by this news. I am grateful the Government has worked with me and my colleagues on this vitally important issue.

"Together these new proposals will kickstart the process of rebalancing our housing market back towards local residents and should make a huge difference to life in Cornwall in the years to come.

"There are measures in these reforms to help boost the tourism industry too, and the consultation will also explore how to give people who let their home out to tourists for short periods more flexibility in doing so."

Steve Double MP said: "Today’s announcements are incredibly welcome, and I thank the Government for listening to calls from myself and my Cornish MP colleagues, and acting to take these sensible and practical steps.

"Simply put, establishing a separate planning use category for short term holiday lets will allow local authorities such as Cornwall Council to become decision-makers on how many of these types of business are in local communities, as well as giving town and parish councils, and the wider public a say in these matters through the planning process.

"I will be encouraging St Austell and Newquay constituency residents to respond to these consultations and have their say, and I hope to see these proposals become reality as soon as possible."

Local Labour parliamentary candidates Perran Moon and Jayne Kirkham also spoke out on the Government's proposal on planning changes for second homes

Perran Moon, Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Camborne and Redruth said: "Our housing crisis underpins so many of the challenges we face in Cornwall. We urgently need a comprehensive, joined-up package of measures to tackle the crisis.

"Such measures should include limitations on the number of both second homes and short-term holiday lets. Many measures are already being implemented in other parts if the UK and we need them here and we need them now."

Jayne Kirkham, Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Truro and Falmouth said: "A Labour Government will bring in a programme of council housebuilding, a Renters' Charter and help for first time buyers.

"A joined-up approach to tackle Cornwall's housing crisis. And devolve the power to Cornwall to take measures to manage our housing supply, so we will never again be reliant on Westminster in a matter so crucial to Cornwall."
