A FALMOUTH pub has celebrated being awarded the CAMRA Kernow Pub of the Year for 2023 with a presentation ceremony joined by its regulars, staff and friends.
The Front, which is on Custom Quay, was named the overall winner after a very closely run competition this year with all the shortlisted pubs being extremely worthy and the top three coming within one mark of each other.
On Saturday (May 27) Cornwall CAMRA members, pub regulars, staff and friends assembled both inside the pub and on the outdoor quayside drinking areas to celebrate this achievement.
CAMRA chairman, Vince Curtis asked all in attendance to cast their minds back to March 2020, when all the pubs across the country closed due to the Covid pandemic. In June of the same year, the pub’s lease was put up for sale and as Vince explained the future of this very popular pub was uncertain.

However, towards the end of 2020, the lease had been purchased by a group of mainly local people and when restrictions were lifted the pub reopened under new management and staff.
Although consistently good beer quality and a range of beer styles are important, Vince also mentioned the other attributes of pubs such as community involvement and social spaces which the Pub of the Year competition involves.
The Front has now gone forward to the South West regional competition and if they win they will be the best out of several thousands of pubs across the county.
Max Bosley, who took over as manager of The Front in 2022, explained what the achievement meant to him, why it’s the best pub in Cornwall, and what he has in store for the future.
Max told The Packet: "I was pleasantly surprised. I'd heard that we were top five at the time, and I thought 'oh we'll probably get top two or three, and I'm happy with that.'
"But no, when we got number one, I was like 'wow,' and in my first year running it as well.
"For myself, I'm like 'wow, that's a really big achievement."
