A BEACH Café near Falmouth had a very close call last night after a fire broke out in a bin outside its property.
The Swanpool Beach Café was the scene of a blaze at around 8:50pm last night after a disposable barbecue was deposited in one of its bins outside the property.
Members of staff from Hooked on the Rocks, a restaurant on the opposite side of Swanpool Beach, reportedly spotted the fire and attempted to douse it with buckets of water.
Two fire crews were mobilised to the incident and used breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service claim the cause of the blaze was believed to be a discarded disposable barbecue.
In an update posted on its social media page, Swanpool Beach Café said: "Tonight we had a very close call. Five more minutes and the whole cafe would have gone up.
"All because someone put a disposable BBQ which was still alight in our bin. Even though there is a metal BBQ bin at the top of the beach.
"Huge thanks to the people who ran around dousing it with seawater and called Falmouth Community Fire Station - you saved our business!"
A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 2051 Critical Control received multiple calls to a bin fire that had potentially spread to a café.
"Two Crews from Falmouth attended the bin fire that was beside the wall of a café on Swanpool Beach.
"Crews used breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.
"Cause was believed to be a discarded disposable barbecue.
"No damage was caused to the inside of the cafe."
