LIFEBOATS in Falmouth were called out at the start of the week in response to a mayday call from a yacht containing two people and was reported to be taking on water.

The calls came in just before 5:30pm on Monday, June 13, with both lifeboats launching within 15 minutes of the shout first coming in.

In an update posted on its social media page, a spokesperson for Falmouth Lifeboat said: "Both Falmouth lifeboats were launched yesterday in response to a Mayday call put out from a 22-foot yacht, with two people on board, reporting they were taking water off St Mawes Castle.

"The lifeboat crew were paged at 5:21pm and the station’s Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Robina Nixon Chard launched at 5:28pm with the all-weather Severn class lifeboat Richard Cox Scott launching five minutes later.

"Both lifeboats were tasked to assist the yacht along with other vessels including the pilot boat LK Mitchell.

"The pilot boat was first on scene and took the casualty vessel in an alongside tow.

"The inshore lifeboat arrived on scene at 5:35pm where the sea was smooth with a force 3 to 4 northwest wind and excellent visibility.

"The inshore lifeboat crew was able to confirm that the water ingress was coming from an inlet hose to the engine which stopped once the engine was turned off. The level of water was fairly low and didn’t need pumping out.

"As the services of the all-weather lifeboat were now not required, it was released from service just after arriving on scene at 5:45pm.

"The inshore lifeboat escorted the pilot boat towing the yacht to Falmouth Yacht Haven after which it was released from service at 6:28pm to return to station.
