A vehicle stopped in Helston uncovered a drugs haul that included suspicious poppy heads and opium resin.

It was one of two incidents in which Cornwall’s traffic police have found themselves dealing with more than first met the eye.

A week ago, last Sunday, officers from the Devon and Cornwall Roads Policing Team stopped a vehicle as it was travelling through Helston.

In it they found five men – and quite a bit more.

Suspected class A and B substances were also located within, including herbal cannabis, opium resin and poppy heads, all of which were seized.

While most poppies are completely harmless, opium poppies can be used to make heroin – and so while they are legal to grow in the UK it is against the law to process them in any way. It has not been confirmed at this stage what variety the poppy heads were.

A police team spokesperson said that the five men were arrested, adding a number of them had also been sought by UK Border Force.

This wasn’t the only vehicle stopped in Helston in which a drugs-related discovery was made, however.

Two weeks ago a driver had only been six hours in the force area when they found themselves running into trouble with police.

Officers were first alerted by the car carrying out “dangerous” manoeuvres in Helston, with a child inside.

It then got worse for the driver when they tested positive for cannabis.

A Roads Policing Team spokesperson said: “Six hours in our force area and already experienced the hospitality of custody.

“Dangerous overtakes will cause you to be stopped, especially with a child on board.

“Subsequently provided a positive Drug Wipe for cannabis. Happy holidays!”
