A Cornish town has been named as one of the best places to live by the sea in the UK.

Penzance, along with locations in Scotland, Essex, Kent, and Ireland, feature in a list published in The Times on Sunday.

It reads: “This selection of the best places to live by the coast includes lively commuter towns, coastal honeypots and spectacular scenery.

“All these contrasting locations have something to offer in every season, with the kind of communities, connections and practicalities that will keep the holiday feeling alive all year round.”

The Times chose Penzance for its "fairytale" fortress of St Michael’s Mount, Jubilee Pool and it being the "centre of Kernow’s cultural renaissance".

The Times said: “For anyone who really, really likes the sea, it’s hard to beat Penzance.

“There’s a view of the water at almost every turn, usually dominated by the fairytale fortress of St Michael’s Mount on its rocky island in Mount’s Bay, and the geothermal, art deco Jubilee Pool is a stunning spot for a swim.

“Life here is supremely creative and a little bit wild. Penzance is at the centre of Kernow’s cultural renaissance, with the Cornish language, food, music, dance, art, and film to the fore.”

It goes on to add: “Compared with the tourist hotspots on the north coast, it’s a fun place to live year-round.

"There’s a good choice of historic properties: Victorian Villas with subtropical gardens on the streets leading up from the harbour and the prom, or the smaller homes in the side streets and pretty passageways that used to be full of sea captains and smugglers, but now house writers, artists and musicians.”

In March Penzance was voted the Best Place to Live in Cornwall in the Muddy Cornwall ‘Best Places to Live’ 2023 awards, as well as being named one of the best places to live in the UK by The Sunday Times.

At that time the Sunday Times praised Penzance for its "stunning coastline", "unique architecture", and "diverse cultural offerings".

The town was selected by a panel of judges who assessed various data sets and carried out extensive research which found that Penzance’s property prices, schools and vibrant arts community highlighted as reasons for its inclusion in the list.

According to The Times' article at the weekend, figures released by estate agency Savills show that homes within 100m of the coast in England and Wales cost an average of 20.7% more than that are 1km further inland. Those with direct views of the water are likely to cost even more.
