A new event created in memory of a Falmouth motorcyclist who lost his life in April will also be raising awareness for a charity close to his heart tomorrow (Saturday).

Will Charman died in a motorbike accident near Swanpool earlier this year, sending shockwaves through the community.

Described by his family as “a friend to all,” the 22-year-old was known to a large number of people in the town through his work and activities.

A talented plumbing and heating engineer for Ardent, he was also a keen motorcyclist who taught himself how to take apart and reassemble any motorbike, and work on them.

Perhaps the only thing that could match his passion for bikes was his love of the gym and calisthenics.

He won the regionals of BodyStrong UK in 2022 and had hoped to compete in the nationals of the event this year.

He was a valued member of The Gym Project in Falmouth, having joined when he was 16, and was also a member of Sequoia gym in Penryn for his calisthenics.

Now the two gyms have partnered to create an event in his name, called Will’s Celebration.

This will take place at The Gym Project on the Falmouth Business Park in Bickland Water Road, with workshops, live music and games.

Workshops will start at 10am with a beginner handstand workshop, followed by a beginner bar and rings workshop at 12 noon, as the three workouts he loved the most.

Then from 1pm onwards there will be a barbecue, drinks, raffle and music.

Entertainment includes the band Tregony Teachers, face painting from Krazy Faces, a bubble show from Dave Nolan, and lawn games. There will also be a pop-up barbers with Reeves Barber Shop.

A plaque showing Will’s handprints in chalk will also be unveiled at the event, which has been sponsored and supported by Sainsbury’s, Tesco and a large number of independent businesses in Falmouth and the local area.

As well as remembering Will, the event will be raising awareness and money for Will’s chosen charity, Spinal Muscular Atrophy UK, which supports people with the condition that affects his baby cousin Arthur. All earnings from the event will go towards the charity.

A large turnout for the event is expected, with around 400 people attending a service for Will at the crematorium following his death.

His sister Victoria said: “There weren’t many people in this community that didn’t know Will.

“His personality was so magnetic and it was impossible to not grow fond of this kind and gentle young man. He loved his family and his home, always putting them first.”
