The owner of a popular ice cream business has said she is “counting on people being honest” after opening two new shops – one of which is run on an honesty basis.
Katie Bray has seen huge success since she opened Gwella Dairy in May 2021, based at her parents' dairy farm near St Martin.
From a simple serving hatch it has developed into a fully-fledged outlet with its own all-weather seating area, while Katie is supplying wholesale ice cream to a large number of pubs, restaurants and other businesses locally.
Now she has expanded the business with not one but two new ventures – an ice cream hut at The Lizard and Little Shed Shop at Cury Cross Lanes.
The latter is a slight diversification of the business, as it is a shop selling a range of locally produced food, from pasta, vegetables and burgers, to sausages, eggs and Gwella’s own milk – plus ice cream of course.
Although the shop is unmanned, it has full CCTV. The shop will be open 7am to 9pm daily throughout the summer and card payments are preferred, through the payment app at the shop.
Katie said: “We are counting on people being honest and it would be fantastic if it was a success, as we could potentially duplicate it to provide a similar service for other local villages lacking a local shop for their essentials.”
She has set up Little Shed Shop alongside her partner Ben Lugg, as an extension of what his parents have been running there for more than 20 years, selling eggs, flowers and other goods.
“Ben and myself are passionate about farming and selling quality food that’s as local as possible, and trying to keep on our little peninsular as much as possible, especially as it has so much to offer.
“We also feel we can offer the community a service which is hard to find this side of Helston,” added Katie.
The Gwella Ice Cream Hut is based in Penmenner Road, at The Lizard.
With views across to the Lizard Lighthouse and Housel Bay, there is a large outdoor seating area with benches next to the hut for people to enjoy their ice cream.
There is also on-site parking, with the hut found on Google Maps under the postcode TR12 7NR or located via What3words: ///cherry.goodbyes.midwinter Katie said: “We were given the opportunity to use a section of the field on Penmenner Road and couldn’t miss the opportunity.
“We have fenced off a small area for the hut and seating area, plus an area for customers to park," said Katie.
“We would encourage customers to make the most of the parking and location and go on a stunning coastal walk that loops back to the hut.”
The hut will be open during the summer months and will also offer coffees, teas, breakfast pastries, milkshakes, as well as Gwella’s famous ice cream.
