“A trip to Falmouth isn't complete without a visit to the famous Club International, or Club I as the locals call it – a plethora of alcoholic beverages await.”
So says one of TripAdvisor reviews for the Falmouth nightclub, in which thousands of clubbers have danced the night away over the years.
We’re heading back two decades to the early 2000s – a heyday for Club I, which continues to be based upstairs at St George’s Arcade.
Sure the carpets were a bit sticky and the clientele questionable on occasion, but that was part of the charm.
Back in 2003 the Packet ran a regular feature in its What’s On pages, linking with Club International for an exciting competition to win free entry no less.
Packet photographers headed out into Falmouth of an evening, to take pictures of those partying the night away at the club.
Called ‘Face in the Crowd’, if you were the lucky person circled that week then it was a ticket to Club International for you!
All you had to do to claim your prize was take a copy of the paper along with you on your night out. Quite what you did with the newspaper once inside was of no concern.
We’re now taking a trip back down memory lane for those enjoying a night out 20 years ago – can you spot anyone you know?
There’s even a fresh-faced Packet reporter who remains at the paper to this day, if you look hard enough.
In the first week of November 2003 the Sugababes had been knocked off the number one spot after just one week, by a song that had been played by Club I for years, but was re-released that year – Fatman Scoop, Be Faithful.
Club I’s top five tracks that week were: Be Faithful by Fatman Scoop, Guilty by Blue, Turn Me On by Kevin Lyttle, Where is the Love by the Black Eyed Peas and Hole in the Head by the Sugababes.
It was all change just a few weeks later, however, when Busted entered the mix with Crashed the Wedding and Britney Spears released Me Against the Music, featuring Madonna. Kevin Lyttle was still there turning people on, Kylie was making an appearance with Slow and Fatman Scoop continued to remain popular in the fifth spot.
He was finally knocked out the top five by the end of the month though, thanks to four new entries – Mandy by Westlife, Jump by Girls Aloud, 50/50 by Lamar and Maybe That’s What It Takes by local girl (Mount Hawke at least) Alex Parks, who became famous when she won Fame Academy. Busted’s Crashed the Wedding was knocked into fourth spot.
