THERE were smiles, tears, and faces of pure delight at Helston Community College this morning (Thursday) as sixth-form students received their A Level results.
The first lot of students arrived just after 9am and were greeted by members of staff and their friends.
Leah Sims was one of the first students to open her results and along with her parents was delighted with her grades. Meanwhile, there were tears of happiness from Alex Penberthy and her parents when she opened her results to see she had received a clean sweep of A*s in her A Levels in biology, chemistry and mathematics.
Alex will now go on to study veterinary science at Cambridge University. A spokesperson from the college said: “Alex has excelled throughout her time at Helston, achieving the college’s prestigious AS Worrall Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement earlier this year.
“Alex was part of the college’s High Achievers Programme, and we are certain her success will continue during her time in higher education.
“Well done Alex – we are so pleased for you!”

The college has also praised the rest of the year 13 students for their exam results today.
The year group have excelled with a 100% pass rate while 60% of students achieved one or more of the top grades (A/A*s or equivalent) and more than 90% of students applying to university have secured their first-choice place.
Alex Lingard, Helston Community College headteacher said: “We are very proud of our students’ achievements – they have worked exceptionally hard and deserve their success.
“It has been a fabulous year for a fabulous group of students.
“May I take this opportunity to thank each of them for their dedication and thank all the staff who have supported them so well – a great team effort.”
This year, more than 40 of the students at Helston will now head for university including Ella Marquis who achieved four A grades and will study Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Meg Martin who achieved a D*, D* and an A will be starting her studies in Fine Art at Cardiff University and Gwen Hutchins who received A* and a AB grade is looking forward to studying English at Exeter.
Other students who achieved incredible results and are heading to university include, Andrei Ciobanu, Josh Bretton, Sam Trubshaw and Demelza Green.
Dr Kieran Ryan, Head of Sixth Form, commented: “The hard work of students has paid off this year, with outstanding performances in a whole range of subjects ranging from A level Mathematics to BTEC Art.
“I am very grateful for the effort and dedication of staff, who have challenged, inspired and supported students throughout their time with us.”
It’s also been a great day for Helston Community College year 12 students who have each passed the BTEC Level 2 Construction Diploma after one year of study.
