After the disappointment of the cancellation of the parade of sail, the tall ships still made a spectacular sight as they left Falmouth yesterday morning (Saturday).
Members of the Packet Camera Club were on hand to capture the ships as they left the docks after four days of celebration.
Falmouth welcomed beautiful tall ships from around the world for four days of festivities as the official start host port for the Tall Ships’ Races Magellan-Elcano.
Unfortunately the Parade of Sail on Friday was cancelled because of bad weather, depriving people of the spectacular sight of all the ships out in Falmouth Bay together.
The Tall Ships fleet will now follow a racecourse to A Coruna, from August 24 to 27, Lisbon from August 31 to September 3 and Cadiz from September 7 to 9.
Tall Ships’ Races are designed to encourage international friendship and training for young people in the art of sailing.
This spectacular, annual event takes place in European waters over the summer months and consists of two racing legs of several hundred nautical miles, and a cruise in company between the legs. This year the Tall Ships Race is called the Magellan-Elcano.
This was the sixth time Falmouth had hosted the globally significant occasion, the last one taking place in 2014.
Falmouth first welcomed the Tall Ships Race in 1966, 1982, 1998, 2008 and then the most recent Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta in 2014.
It was truly international occasion, with ships in attendance from the UK, Mexico, Denmark, Poland, Uruguay, Spain, Italy and Belgium.
