A CORNISH brewery celebrated its flagship lager winning gold in a highly regarded competition in the drinks industry earlier this month.
St Austell’s Brewery flagship lager, Korev has won the gold in the British Bottlers’ Institute (BBI) drinks competition.
Korev (4.8%abv) was handed the top award by the judges at the annual BBI competition in its lagers 4-5.5% category.
Brewed with as much Cornish-grown barley St Austell can get its hands on, Korev is a popular ‘Helles style lager’ – pale in colour with a crisp taste.
Tribute’s pale ale (4.2% abv) and Big Job Double IPA (7.2%) also scooped ‘Diploma of Excellence’ accolades.'

Georgina Young, brewing director for St Austell Brewery said: “We’re delighted that Korev has been recognised as the best in class for lager. We’ve worked hard to perfect its recipe and we’re proud of everything Korev brings to those who drink it and to the brewery.
“To see Tribute, our flagship ale and also Big Job IPA, Proper Job’s more punchy relative receive recognition as well is amazing. We feel honoured to be able to produce leading beers and lagers that so many people enjoy.”
BBI president Ed Binstead said: “This year’s BBI Competition had a larger number of entrants compared to last year, with UK and international brewers packing out the classes in the ale and lager categories.
“When the blind tasting categories increase so much, successful winners of gold and silver medals and diplomas for excellence can be very proud of their achievements. They have produced top quality products which were recognised by the judges - congratulations to all the winners.
“St Austell were deserving winners of a number of awards this year. Korev is a popular lager that has won many awards previously in our competition and it was a great honour to award it a gold medal. Big Job and Tribute also excelled, each scoring a diploma for their quality and a true testament to their brewing skill and heritage.”
To top off a week of wins, St Austell Brewery also secured a bronze medal for its Proper Job IPA in CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain competition at this year’s Great British Beer Festival.
The winning trio for St Austell Brewery:
Gold Medal • Korev - Lagers 4.0-5.5%
Diploma • Tribute - Ale 4.0-4.4% • Big Job - IPA 5.5-7.4%
