Police have confirmed that a car left the road and went into a ditch off the main Helston to Porthleven Road this afternoon.

Devon and Cornwall Police said they received reports of a car leaving the highway on Porthleven Road, Helston at around 2.30pm this afternoon.

They said emergency services were in attendance and a road closure was put in place.

The male driver was taken to hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life changing or life threatening.

A statement issued by the press office said: "We received reports of a single-vehicle collision, in which a car had left the highway and gone into a ditch, in Porthleven Road, Helston, at around 2.30pm.

"Officers, the fire service and paramedics all attended the scene and a road closure was put in place.

"The male driver of the car has been taken to hospital with injuries not currently believed to be life-changing or life-threatening.

"The vehicle has been recovered and road closures were lifted by 4.45pm."

Earlier reports were coming in of the road from Helston to Porthleven up the hill past the boating lake being closed after a car went off the road.

The incident has now been confirmed by police. Police and ambulance were seen heading to Helston with their emergency lights on.

People living nearby reported that the road is closed from the top of the hill (coming from Helston) right up to the bend at Loe Bar/Penrose estate.

People said you couldn't' get anywhere near the bend with police and a critical care car seen rushing to the scene.

A post on Facebook said: "Car gone over the edge heading towards Helston on the bends so might be closed for a while as tricky recovery."

They said the accident happened at the low wall on the left as you head towards Helston after the right hand bend just before you start climbing the hill.

Another resident said: "Just seen the air ambulance car heading to the scene so must be quite serious."

One witness said that apparently the car caught fire but everyone was able to get out OK. However the police did not mention a fire.

One person said: "Oh God heard all the sirens let's hope no-one seriously hurt."
