The first of what will this year be two Helston Harvest Fair weekends is upon us, as organisers spread out events for 2023.
Today sees the Fun Dog Show taking place outside the Old Cattle Market, while tomorrow is the Horticultural and Craft Show inside the same venue.
However, this year’s carnival, which often takes place the same weekend, will this year be held next Saturday, September 9.
Organisers hope that by separating out events, people will have time to take their show entries down this evening, and also still take part in the carnival next week.
The Harvest Fair Schedule is as follows:
Saturday, September 9
Fun Dog Show
Held outside the Old Cattle Market, entries are accepted from 10am for a 10.30am start of judging.
Classes are: 1 Most handsome dog, 2 Prettiest bitch, 3 Golden oldie, 4 Cutest puppy, 5 Junior handling, 6 Waggiest tail, 7 Dog / Bitch most like their owner, 8 Best legs combo, 9 My Dogs got talent!, 10 Fancy dress (dog / handler or both).

Open to the public from 2pm at the Old Cattle Market at Coronation Park.
There are sections for: Flowers, Fruit and vegetables, Jams and preserves, Cookery, Handicrafts, Art, Wines, Photography, Floral Art and Youth entries.
Prizes will be awarded at 4pm, and the winner of the Find the Mice Competition around Helston will be drawn live.
Saturday, September 9
Helston Carnival
Carnival entries can arrive at Helston Tesco carpark from 3pm and judging will take place at 4.45pm.
Certificates and prizes will be awarded before leaving the carpark at 6pm to walk through the town.
The carnival will turn left out of Tesco and move along Clodgey Way, down the hill at the traffic lights along Trengrouse Way and turn right into Meneage Streeet. It will then turn left at the traffic lights down Coinagehall Street to the bottom, turn around at the Grylls Monument and move back up through the town along Wendron Street, Godolphin Road and right at the top back to Tesco.
There are ten different classes, including both vehicles and walkers, with each class winner winning a trophy, and cash prize donated by Flambards.
It is free to enter, and can be entered on the day, although organisers say entries in advance are hugely appreciated.
Classes are for: 1 Small float, 2 Medium float, 3 Large float, 4 Decorated vehicle (can be accompanied by walkers), 5 Group walkers – under 10 walkers, 6 Group walkers – 10 or more walkers, 7 Individual walker, 8 Vintage car, 9 Any other vintage vehicle, 10 Decorated bike, buggy, wheelchair or similar.
Any decision to cancel the event due to bad weather will be made by 2pm on the day and announced on the Helston Harvest Fair Facebook page and website.
Last year’s carnival was cancelled out of respect for the royal family, due to the death of the Queen on September 8. For more information about this year’s carnival, visit https://www.helstoncarnival.com/ where there is an entry form to complete.
Also taking place this weekend is Helston Farmers’ Market today (Saturday, September 2) from 9.30am to 12.30pm, while Helston Bowling Club is having an Open Bowls Competition over today and tomorrow, starting at 9am on Saturday.
