HUNDRERDS of people are expected to join in the sea shanty festivities today at The Lizard.
The Top House Inn, the Lizard is inviting friends, families, and RNLI Lifeboat supporters to its first-ever sea shanty festival this weekend.
During Saturday the festival highlights include performances by some of Cornwall’s most loved musical acts including Jolly Roger, Odd N Sods, Culdrose Military Wives Choir, The Lemoniares, The Press Gang, Cadgwith Singers and Hit and Miss.
There will also be special appearances by the children of The Lizard's Landewednack Primary School. The young sea shanty singers will range from age five to 11, and there will also be country dancing from the school's ‘Razorbills’ class - a long-standing tradition in the school, with many of the children's parents having danced whilst at Landewednack.
The event will be closed with the upbeat tones of Will Keating and John ‘the banjo’ Dowling.
As well as musical entertainment throughout the event, there will also be a traditional hog roast with activities for all members of the family.
In addition, the festival will offer prizes with a mega raffle featuring more than 60 prizes donated by generous supporters, as well as two tombolas.
A spokesperson for the Lizard Sea Shanty Festival said: “While the festival promises a day filled with joy and celebration, it is essential to remember its true purpose, which extends beyond the captivating melodies and jovial atmosphere.
“Proceeds from the festival, as well as the nominal parking fee of £5 for the day at Tregullas Farm, will contribute to the invaluable work carried out by the Lizard RNLI Lifeboat.
"These brave individuals dedicate their lives to keeping our coastal communities safe and secure, tirelessly patrolling the unpredictable waters surrounding the Lizard.”
The event starts at 11am and will run until just before 11pm.
