OWNERS of a Cornish pub have said they will ‘continue to fly the flag for Cornwall’ after being named finalists in this year's Great British Pub Awards.
Tom and Katie Hannon, owners of The Rising Sun on Mitchell Hill in Truro were thrilled when the pub was nominated in this year’s Great British Pub Awards.
The Rising Sun was listed as a finalist in the sustainable pub category and the only Cornish pub to be nominated in the entire awards as well as one few from the South West.
Unfortunately, the much-loved pub narrowly missed out on being named winner which instead went to Stroud Brewery Taproom in Gloucestershire.
However, for Katie and Tom just being recognised is an honour in itself. Tom told the Packet: “Being up against some of the best in the UK and being the only Cornish pub is an award in itself. We feel very humbled.
“To be the only Cornish and one of the few South West pubs nominated is an honour and we will continue to fly the flag for Cornwall.”
Since taking over The Rising Sun eight years ago, Tom and Katie’s passion for serving sustainable and locally sourced food has seen them win and be nominated for several prestigious awards.
In 2021 The Rising Sun was named the best bar at the 2021 Trencherman’s Awards and the best dining pub in the Taste of the West awards for 2018/2019. They have also been nominated for several other awards.

Earlier this year, The Rising Run took home the top prize for best food at the Punch Publican Awards 2023 and was given the gold in the Taste of the West Awards.
Diners have also raved about The Rising Sun on TripAdvisor too. One review said: “The food was amazing; the portions were a very decent size.
“All the staff were lovely, including the chefs.
“Not overpriced, great atmosphere, perfect food.
“We will be returning.”
