People living and working in Helston have shared their thoughts about one of the town's eldest bakeries closing for good at the end of this month.

Following the announcement from Warren’s Bakery on Wednesday (September 27) that its shops in Helston and Truro will close due to lack of profit at the end of this month, the Packet popped into the town on Thursday to speak to Warren’s staff, local people, and business owners to find out how they felt about Warren’s in Helston closing writes community reporter Kate Locket.

When I first arrived in town on Thursday morning, I headed straight for Warren’s to find out from the staff how they felt about the shop closing and what the future holds for them.

I was greeted by Jasmine, a sales assistant, and a university student. Jasmine said that working at Warren’s was “the best job” she has ever had. She said: “It’s very sad because this is the best job I have ever had.

“I have been offered to work in other shops in Cornwall, but it’s just the travel side of it.

“I will continue at university and look for another job in the meantime.”

After I spoke to Jasmine, I popped into Vape Direct Helston, which is opposite Warren’s to speak to shop owner Sara White about how she felt that Warren’s was closing. She said: “As a shop opposite, it’s such a shame to see it go.

“I go there regularly for lunch and the staff have always been lovely and friendly.

“As a business, we have helped each other out over the past eight years since the shop has been open.”

Following my chat with Sara, I popped in and spoke to Ann Pascoe, owner of Manor Fashions, on Meneage Street who told me that “although it is sad to see the shop close, and Helston is gaining more new shops, we need more locals to come into the town”.

After I had spoken with Ann, I asked a local man named Jack who was shopping in the town with his partner about what he thought of Warren's closing. Jack, who has shopped in Warren’s for years, said he was "gutted" that the shop was closing. He said: “It’s been in the community for so many years they definitely sell the best pasties in Helston.

“I have been going there all my life, and I am pretty gutted about it if I am honest.”
