DESPITE heavy wind and rain on Sunday, thousands of people across Cornwall came out to pay tribute to those who have died in conflicts around the world.
Although the weather was not as welcoming as it had been in previous years, friends, families, and current and former members of the Armed Forces all came out to watch parades and services in Cornwall on Remembrance Sunday.
Here is our round-up of parades and services on Remembrance Sunday in Cornwall.
Falmouth
In Falmouth, the parade consisted of old and future soldiers formed up The Moor before setting off up the road towards the Kimberley Park Memorial led by the pipes of the Kernow Pipes and Drums.
The parade formed up around the war memorial which had four standard bearers on each corner with veterans, police, and army cadets the RNLI and youngsters from Falmouth cubs, scouts, and guides.
The two-minute silence was observed after a short service by Father Froom and the salutation made following the sounding of the Last Post.
Penryn
The procession led off at Temperance Hall on Sunday morning towards St Gulvias Church which was followed by a Remembrance Sunday service and wreath laying.
Truro
In Truro, the service began at 11am with an Act of Remembrance at Truro Cathedral.
Meanwhile, a two-minute silence was held at the War Memorial on Boscawen Street, which was led by the Truro Branch of the Royal British Legion.
At 2.30, more wreaths were laid at the war memorial with a military parade, pausing for the salute with His Majesty the King’s Lord Lieutenant for Cornwall Col E T Bolitho OBE.
Helston
Hundreds of people lined the streets of Helston to watch the parade march through the town on Sunday.
Helston Town Band led the procession which consisted of members of the Armed Forces, representatives from the Royal British Legion, police, and firefighters, army cadets, local girl guiding groups including Brownies and Rainbows and the scouts and Cubs.
A service was held at the monument in Helston where wreaths were laid.
Porthleven
Porthleven Town Council has thanked those who participated in the Remembrance Sunday Service and the procession through the village. Special thanks were given to all those who helped including Ltdr Cdr Keith Adams (parade marshal), Porthleven Town Band who led the procession, Revd Christine Schaus, Rev Danny Reed, Mr A Bell who read the Roll of Honour, Ltd Cdr S Parry (RNAS Culdrose), traffic marshals and everyone else who helped during the event.
Special thanks were also given to May Searle, who has organised refreshments after Remembrance processions and services for the past 35 years. As a thank you, Porthleven mayor, Cllr Mike Toy presented May with a town plaque as she will now retire.
Penzance
In Penzance, the parade set off from St John’s Hall and made its way to the town’s War Memorial at Battery Rocks via Alverton Street, The Greenmarket, Market Place, Chapel Street, Under Chapel Yard and Battery Road.
Camborne
Hundreds of people lined the streets in Camborne to watch the parade march through the town. The parade then marched towards the Parish Church for a service and wreath laying.
Redruth
Representatives from the Royal British Legion Redruth branch have thanked those who supported the parade on Sunday. Special thanks to Illogan Sparnon Silver Band and Redruth Town Band for coming together to provide music. Thanks, were also given to Reverend Chris for the service in St Andrew’s Church and to all the youth organisations, especially 77 Squadron Air Cadets in Redruth for carrying standards.
Tregony
At least 200 parishioners attended the Remembrance Service at the War Memorial on The Square last Sunday morning. The service was led, jointly, by Rev Ian Livingstone, from the Tregony Bible Christian Church and Rev Douglas Wren, from St Cuby’s Anglican Church.
Officers from the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Force were in attendance to lay wreaths along with representatives from the various parish organisations.
Officers Colonel David Attwater read: “Remember Ypres etc” at the comment of the Act of Remembrance and Councillor Mark Greet, chairman of the Tregony with Cuby Parish Council, recited The Ode.
Mawgan
Almost 100 people from across the Meneage Parish gathered at Mawgan War Memorial for Remembrance Sunday. Ron Burdekin spoke the exhortation and laid the Royal British Legion wreath on the memorial. Children from Garras Owlets Preschool and Garras School laid posies, whilst other wreaths included those on behalf of HMS Seahawk, RNAS Culdrose, Mawgan Parish Council, St Martin Parish Council, Mawgan Recreation Hall, St Mawgan in Meneage Church, St Martin in Meneage Church, Mawgan Church Bell Ringers, Cornwall Council and Parc Vro Residential Home.
The service of Remembrance was led by the Reverend Lisa Coupland, and the hymns were accompanied, on the hornet by Anthony Hoskin who also played the Last Port and Reveille on either side of the two-minute silence.
