Former Pirate FM listeners have been reacting to the loss of their favourite local radio station – and needless to say they aren’t happy!
Pirate FM became Hits Radio Cornwall today (Wednesday, April 17) on DAB digital radio while Greatest Hits Radio arrived on FM across Cornwall, taking over Pirate's FM slot.
Former Pirate FM presenters Scott Temple and Holly Day join Greatest Hits Radio team as co-hosts of a brand-new local afternoon show. The new show will kicks off this afternoon on FM across Cornwall from 1 – 4pm and the Packet will be listening live at 2pm.
Meanwhile, former Pirate Breakfast Show hosts Neil and Saffy have kept their same slot, over on Hits Radio, from 6am every weekday.
However many former listeners of Pirate FM have been venting their displeasure on the Pirate FM Facebook page, which still exists – for now.
One of the many commentators who were unhappy with the change said: "I'm sad about this, I listened to Pirate because it had far more of a local identity than my own local radio station, which was also swallowed up by Hits Radio a couple of weeks ago.
“I am persevering for now. Neil and Saffy followed by Ken Bruce and then Scott and Holly. Then to get the same amount of ‘Cornishness’ as I previously enjoyed, I'll switch to other local radio stations."
It’s not just people from Cornwall who are unhappy though, visitors from up country suare as well.
“So sad about this,” one said. “We come to Cornwall every year and always get excited when we see Pirate FM come up on the radio screen. We even take a picture and send it to family. That's our 'nearly there' pic. "
While another said: “We listened every time we came down on holiday in the 90s and every day since moving here in the 00s. But this is the end for me 😢 Radio 2 in the car and Heart 70s at home now. RIP Pirate FM.”
One said he had been listening since he was a kid. “Pirate was part of my childhood with legends such as Duncan Warren and the late Ian Polmear,” he said.
“Such a shame it's all over. I understand why it's happened but it doesn't make the pain any easier.”
While anothers simply said, with an angry face and crying face emoji: “We’ve had our radio station taken from us.
“No more local news, no more local weather and much reduced and vitality importantly up to the minute local travel updates, they have made a huge mistake doing this to Cornwall 😢."
However others were more positive about the change saying, with one woman saying: “I liked listening to Pirate FM, but a while ago I found Greatest Hits Radio on DAB and preferred that more.
“Six months ago I started listening to a mix as I couldn’t have a DAB radio in my car, but I could at home, I’m sad to see Pirate has gone, but when I’m in my car, I’ll look forward to listening to greatest hits on 102.8, and to listening to Holly and Scott in the afternoon, as well as all the other programs on Greatest Hits [Radio].”
