A new initiative to crack down low-level crime and anti-social behaviour in Falmouth has been launched by the town team.
Safe & Secure, is a business engagement venture with the aim to make Falmouth safer through various innovative measures.
Rising rates of low-level crime and anti-social behaviour have been a concern for many UK high streets in the wake of the pandemic.
The initiative has been launched by Falmouth Town Team a collaboration between Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID) and Falmouth Town Council.
During recent consultations, 83 per cent of businesses in Falmouth identified anti-social behaviour as a key area for BID investment, leading to the formation of the Safe & Secure approach.
The project includes the introduction of Street Rangers, who will provide a visible security presence throughout the town and liaise directly with local businesses and the police.
Alongside their role, they will promote and encourage integration of the new crime reporting system, known as Disc.
The new Disc service, funded by BID, will provide a safe and easy-to-use online monitoring tool, enabling local businesses to efficiently report offences to the authorities.
It will also allow businesses to submit incident reports, track offenders, and stay apprised of the latest trends in crime.
To bolster town security even further, an enhanced CCTV service is projected to launch.
The Town Team proactively secured the operation of this service when the previous scheme faced potential cuts due to management shifts between Cornwall Council and Tolvaddon Fire Control.
Now, Falmouth's expanded CCTV network will provide an additional security measure, supplemented by a continuously monitored control room.
Richard Wilcox, executive director of Falmouth BID, said: "Following our strong mandate at the recent BID ballot to continue investing in Falmouth through a fourth, five-year term, we have worked hard to launch the significant new Safe & Secure scheme".
Chris Vincent, Falmouth neighbourhood sergeant for Devon and Cornwall Police, added: "The new Falmouth Street Rangers service and the activation of the Disc system will serve to assist us all in attaining our objectives with regards to low-level crime, anti-social behaviour and community engagement."
