A Cornwall care home was abuzz with celebration this week, as it marked a very special occasion – a resident’s 101st birthday.

Roscarrack House in Falmouth celebrated Hazel’s milestone birthday on Friday, May 24.

Despite having a minor operation the day before her birthday, Hazel was said to be in 'good spirits' for her big day.

She was presented with cards, flowers and a birthday cake and played a selection of games with staff and other care home residents.

Born in Mylor, Hazel’s life has been a remarkable journey. After leaving school, she and her sister embarked on a career as a flower picker.

Hazel then joined the Air Force during World War II, becoming a WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force), she was primarily stationed in Wales, contributing to the war effort.

Love blossomed for Hazel on a train journey, where she met her future husband, a soldier in the Army. Their connection sparked a long-distance romance fuelled by letters, ultimately leading them to marry and build a family of three children.

Life took them on various postings before they finally settled in Budock Water in 1972.

Hazel came to Roscarrack House in 2023, just shy of her 100th birthday.

Staff describe Hazel as having a ‘great sense of humour, and quick wit’ and embracing life to the fullest.

A Roscarrack House spokesperson said: “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Hazel on this incredible milestone.

“Her zest for life and positive spirit are an inspiration to all.”
