The launch of four new more eco-friendly hire motorboats has prompted a competition for the public to name one of them.

Falmouth Boat Hire based at Custom House Quay which was established in Falmouth in 1954 has acquired four new 100% recyclable motorboats from manufacturers in the Netherlands.

The boats are smaller and lighter than the ones they replace and easier for people to handle. They also have smaller much more fuel efficient engines of six horsepower fitted by Robin Curnow Outboard Motor Specialist in Commercial Road, Penryn.

Three of the new boats are called Evie, Sophie and Woody, but the company wants the public’s help to name the fourth and will be running a competition on their Facebook page.

Dave Fearn, CEO Falmouth Boat Hire, told the Packet recent licence changes and safety code meant some of his older boats were no longer suitable.

“There was a big licence change for hire boats that came in this year, there was a new code that came in, making things safer on the water, so we’re all for it, but it did cause a little bit of a headache for our fleet of nine boats,” he said.

“Some of those weren’t quite going to get through the new stipulations, but we did manage to get six of them through so decided we were going to buy four new ones.

“These ones go straight through the new regulations.”

The boats will be hired out for people to take out on the Carrick Roads. Anybody over 18 can take them out. They will be given tuition beforehand.

The company provides all the safety equipment and they can only be taken out as far as Black Rock.

“No experience needed as they are so easy to handle,” said David. “I think they look great. I think they are going to be very popular.

“The boats are 100% recyclable, once they do get to the end of their life they can go off and be recycled.”

Neville Curnow from Robin Curnow Outboard Motor Specialist who provided the engines said they were delighted to be working with Falmouth Boat Hire.

“As a business founded by Robin in 1968, we’ve been involved in the hire boat business for years and we’re just delighted to have been involved with Dave again, supplying him with boats and keeping the fleet running.”

The boats were put into the water on May 23 taken down to Custom House Quay ready to be hired out.

The boats are restricted six knots and can carry up to eight people. They are easy to drive with a steering wheel and just sit and go. They always have own safety boat out All day hire for eight hours is £240 while an hour will cost you £45.
