Cornwall Blood Bikes, which delivers critical medical supplies and blood to hospices and hospitals, has been given a £2,000 donation from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation.

The money was donated after the charity was nominated by colleagues at the Society's Falmouth agency.

Cornwall Blood Bikes, which carries out its operations 365 days a year, relies on its 75 volunteers.

They operate Monday to Friday between 5pm and 7am, and are on duty 24 hours during weekends and Bank Holidays.

Amidst the responsibilities of the blood bikers is the delivery of urgent medical supplies, pathology samples, whole blood, platelets, medical notes, equipment, medication, and frozen breast milk to Cornwall's hospices and hospitals.

In 2022, the charity's fleet of 17 motorbikes covered an impressive 185,317 miles.

The charity was nominated after a customer at the Falmouth agency of Yorkshire Building Society made its work known to a staff member.

Kathy Payne, the manager of the Falmouth agency of Yorkshire Building Society, said: "We are proud to be able to support Cornwall Blood Bikes in our community with a donation from Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation.

"The work that they are doing to support NHS patients is invaluable."

Ian Butler, fundraising manager at Cornwall Blood Bikes, said: "This donation from Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation is the sort of life blood donation that ensures CBB’s wheels keep turning and we can continue our service to Cornwall."
