St Michael’s C of E Primary School is gearing up to host the inaugural Armed Forces Day Celebration Picnic this month.

The school is inviting the community, pupils, and staff from schools across Helston to bring a picnic and join in the fun between 1.30pm to 3.15pm on Friday, June 28.

This free event aims to celebrate the contributions of the Armed Forces and build stronger support networks for children of military families. Still, it is open to all families in Helston (not just service families).

From 1:30pm to 3:15pm, the school grounds will transform into a hub of entertainment. Families can expect a range of activities, including:

  • Free inflatable assault course
  • Free climbing wall
  • Free interactive circus skills
  • Free face painting
  • Free nerf shooting range
  • Free bouncy castle
  • Free glitter tattoos
  • Culdrose Fire Station and fire truck
  • Food trucks offering burgers, ice cream, coffee, and cake
  • Royal British Legion presence
  • Aggies
  • Royal Naval Children’s Charity
  • Culdrose Medical Centre participation
  • Culdrose Community Centre representatives
  • Helston Air Cadets
  • Interactive first-aid demonstrations from Culdrose Medics
  • Karate demonstrations

Beyond the exciting activities, the event provides a valuable opportunity to recognise and support children from military families. Rumour has it the base is also trying to arrange a fly-by on the day, so keep your fingers crossed!

St Michael’s C of E School has a dedicated space in the school hall, featuring a world map where children can pin pictures of their loved ones serving overseas. A countdown calendar also helps them track the time until their family members return home.

"We are thrilled to be hosting this inaugural Armed Forces Day celebration," said Jade Sonnichsen, secretary of St Michael's C of E School.

"This event is about bringing our community together to show our appreciation for the Armed Forces by providing a fun and engaging experience for children and their families.

"Our hope is that one of the other schools will host the event next year and we can all have a turn at hosting for this wonderful cause"

The event is free, but registration is required. There is no parking available on-site, they ask that attendees use the council car park next to the old Budgens building or other car parks and not use nearby residential roads.
