Helston will be hosting its first Pride event today (Saturday) with music, art and plenty of rainbows on show.

Taking place at Coronation Park and Boating Lake, the Helston Pride Picnic will run from 11am until 2pm.

Helston Community College’s PRIDE group came up with the idea for the event, organising it with the support of Helston Town Council, and Cornwall Pride helping to publicise it.

Entertainment over the three-hour event will include live music from Helston Community College’s youth bands and soloists, along with an open-mic session available for anyone to take part in.

There will also be an exhibition of entries for a diversity-themed art competition on show, with food and drink to buy and of course lots and lots of rainbows.

People are encouraged to take along their own picnic, or buy food and drink from the Boating Lake Café.

The event has received the support of many people in the local community on Facebook, with one person writing: “So proud of Helston for organising this event” while another said: “I love how this has been developed by the kids/youth groups, it's fantastic!”

The next official Cornwall Pride event takes place on July 20, with Newquay Pride.

Last week Cornwall Pride travelled to Bodmin, with the Pride flag marched through the centre of the town and Priory Park, where performances took place.

Before that it was the turn of Penzance Pride, St Austell Pride and Redruth Pride.

This year’s Pride events in the Duchy kicked off in April with Falmouth Pride.

In total Cornwall is hosting 11 Pride events spread across five months.

June marks Pride Month, which is a month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities around the world, commemorating years of campaigning for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of equal justice.

The month ends with the large London Pride event on June 29 at which Cornwall will be represented.
