Roadworks are set to return to the main road through Penryn this month as work restarts to upgrade the sewage system underneath it.

South West Water completed a large section of its essential sewer replacement work in Commercial Road back in April.

South West Water says from July 8-19 they will be taking pipe samples over the bridge. They say they then aim to carry out the final stage of the work in September 2024. This will involve re-lining the sewer over the bridge and making final connections to the pumping station.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place.

The work was supposed to have been carried out in June but was delayed until this month after the company unexpectedly encountered some wiring in the drilling area.

The company had been working on Commercial Road since January to replace and renew the sewer, as the existing one had become prone to bursts due to its age.

The £850,000 work is part of an investment programme by South West Water across the South West to improve the performance of its sewers and protect the environment.

By replacing the pipe in Penryn using a combination of new pipework and relining – a technique which creates a strong new pipe within the existing one – it will help future-proof the network and reduce the risk of any future bursts.

While the majority of this scheme has now been completed, the remaining relining work over Penryn Bridge and final connections will now need to be carried out as sewer levels return to normal following the incredibly wet start to the year.

South West Water says it will be making every effort to keep disruption from this remaining work to a minimum, and will have another dedicated Customer Liaison Officer on site to keep local residents and businesses up to date with its progress.

Due to the upcoming temporary lights for further water works on Commercial Road and Penryn Bridge, OTS Buses is warning its 69 and 69A services are likely to see some changes and there will be delays over this period.

The company says this may include temporary changes to route of service 69 in Penryn to avoid queuing twice, as well as the inevitable late running of services; up to 25 minutes of delays in our previous experience.

“We are of course remarkably frustrated to see the return of works at this location and please be assured we will always do our best. However, disruption to our services and your journey are simply unavoidable when we're faced with situations like this,” the company said in a statement on Facebook.
