The owners of a popular Truro pub have decided to close their doors with immediate effect.
The Wig and Pen in Truro has closed its doors after owners Tom and Lara Trubshaw announced the difficult decision, citing the ongoing challenges of running a pub in the current economic climate.
In a joint statement shared on Facebook today (Thursday), the couple shared their gratitude to the ‘fantastic team and customer’.
The post reads: “It’s with very heavy hearts that after two and a half years at the Wig and Pen, we want to let you all know we’ve made the difficult decision to move on from managing the pub and have closed the site with immediate effect.
“The combination of high tax rates, energy bills, and other continually rising costs mean despite looking at every possible option, we are left with no choice but to call time at the bar.
“A huge, huge thank you to all our fantastic team and customers with whom we’ve shared this journey – it was brilliant, truly.”
Following the announcement, an influx of support for Lara and Tom has been shared on Facebook. One customer said: “Definitely one of Truro’s finest, but totally understandable in this current climate.
"The delish meals and wonderful staff will stay as some of our favourite memories when we came on holiday to Truro with our dog.” Another commented: “So sad, thank you for being the best food pub in Truro and the one with the biggest welcome.”
Following an 18-month closure, the historic pub reopened in March 2022 under Tom and Lara's management.
They lovingly restored the Wig & Pen, originally built as two villas circa 1830, back to its former character beloved by Truro residents in the 1980s and 90s. Tom and Lara also run the award-winning Peterville Inn in St Agnes.
Last month, Tom and Lara said they were “over the moon” after the Peterville Inn was named the Best Pub of the Year in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence. You can read more about this here: Cornwall pub owners 'over the moon' after being named best in England.
