A weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for thunderstorms and heavy downpours in Cornwall this afternoon (Friday).

The warning which is in effect from 1pm today until 9pm indicates the potential for slow-moving thunderstorms which could bring disruption across the Duchy.

The Met Office is advising people what to expect:

Heavy rainfall and flooding: Expect significant rainfall, leading to possible spray and sudden flooding on roads. This could create hazardous driving conditions and potentially result in road closures.

Travel disruption: There is a chance of delays and cancellations to train and bus services due to flooding or lightning strikes.

Power outages: There is a slight chance of power cuts and interruptions to other services in homes and businesses.

Property damage: While the likelihood is small, there is a chance of homes and businesses being flooded quickly, leading to potential damage caused by floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.

Risk of danger to life: There is a small chance of fast-slowing or deep floodwater creating dangerous conditions that could pose a threat to life.

Staying Safe:

The Met Office advises taking precautions to stay safe during the storm. This includes:

Be aware of the risks: Stay informed about the weather forecast and pay attention to warnings.

Avoid driving in flooded areas: Never attempt to drive through floodwater. It's impossible to know the depth of the water, and even a small amount can be dangerous.

Secure loose objects: Bring in anything that could be blown away by strong winds, such as garden furniture and potted plants.

Unplug appliances: Disconnect electrical appliances and equipment during thunderstorms to avoid damage from lightning strikes.

Stay indoors during thunderstorms: If you are caught outdoors during a thunderstorm, seek shelter immediately.
