Branston recently marked the Cornish New potato season at Stennack Farm, near St Ives.

In partnership with Tesco, Branston and its national Seasonal Spuds campaign, which celebrates the versatility of potatoes, hosted a BBQ event to educate guests on the Cornish New potatoes, which are grown locally and supplied to Tesco stores nationwide through summer.

Hosting the event were Cornish BBQ chef Marcus Bawdon from Country Wood Smoke, and Branston's Charlie Flack.

Attendees were treated to a mouth-watering Cornish-inspired menu made right before their eyes, featuring dishes like picanha steak with chimichurri sauce, spiced butter monkfish, and a spiced butter charred hispi cabbage.

All were paired with delectable new potato dishes.

The duo provided key grilling advice, such as adding layers of marinade for flavour, incorporating bone marrow into potatoes, and carefully heat-managing vegetables.

They also encouraged fun experimentation with food.

A group of 30 guests were present at the gathering, including Cornish potato growers, food influencers and bloggers, and representatives from Tesco and Branston.

The attendees enjoyed garden games supplied by Cornwall Hire and hand-drawn caricatures by Cassie Kemp of Cornwall Caricatures.

The event included a talk from Ben Mitchell, procurement and agronomy manager at Branston, who discussed the complexities of growing early Cornish crops.

This was followed by a talk from Harry Holder, the assistant vegetable and potato buyer at Tesco, about appreciating British seasonal produce.

The dessert was a sweet potato brownie crafted by Branston's development technologist Sam Dunn.

Guests also enjoyed Cornish gin from local distillery St Sithney and goodie bags filled with Cornish New potatoes, Cornish sea salt, potato vodka from Colwith Farm Distillery, aprons, and earring dishes from Jo Downs Handmade Glass.

Prizes were also up for grabs, which included handmade glass wall art and a bottle of Aval Dor Cornish vodka.

Cornish New Potatoes, some of the earliest UK mainland potatoes, are available in Tesco stores now until mid-August, with various recipes available on Seasonal Spuds website.
