In a nod to their namesake, 20 preschoolers from Puffins Day Nursery in Helston enjoyed a special trip to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary to meet its newest additions.

The idea for the trip came from Caroline (Caz) Carter, the owner of Puffins Nursery based on Water-Ma-Trout, who wanted to give her graduation preschoolers a memorable send-off.

Upon learning that the sanctuary had opened the brand-new Puffin Island enclosure in April, she knew it was the perfect place for the children to enjoy their last few days of nursery life before starting primary school in September.

On Thursday, the children made their way to the popular sanctuary, where they witnessed the puffins being fed. They also had the opportunity to see the seals and enjoy the park.

“It was a really lovely day,” said Danielle Gilbert of Puffins. “The children and staff members who went along with them had an amazing time.”

Caz said that visiting Puffin Island was the ‘highlight for everyone’.

Since opening in April of this year, Puffin Island has allowed thousands of visitors to see the birds up close.

The ten puffins, previously rescued by the Sea Life Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary in Iceland, cannot survive in the wild due to various medical conditions.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary provides a safe haven for these birds ensuring their continued care and offering an opportunity for visitors to learn more about them.
