Truro Cathedral has been awarded a £30,000 grant by the Cathedral Music Trust and Tanner Trust.

This money will be spread over two years, from September 2024 to August 2026.

It will be used to partly fund the cost of the assistant director of music.

The grant is a recognition of both the quality of Truro Cathedral Choir and the valuable role the assistant director plays within it.

Andrew Wyatt, the assistant director, has number of extra jobs including being the primary organist for cathedral services, managing the Organ Scholarship, arranging choir visits to external venues, and sharing the cathedral's musical expertise with the wider community.

His position requires preparation for multiple services per week, maintaining a high professional standard, and helping the cathedral's choir and choral scholars to improve their musical skills.

James Anderson-Besant, the director of music said: "We are very grateful to the Tanner Trust and the Cathedral Music Trust for awarding this grant.

"It will part-fund the key post of assistant director of music and enable us to engage more widely with our local community.

"Sharing our love of singing will enrich Cornwall’s already vibrant music scene, while also nourishing our own tradition.

"This is an exciting time for music in Truro."

The choir performs at weekly services, often on Sundays at 10am and 4pm, as well as on weekdays at 5.30pm.

Many services from the vibrant and active church, built exclusively by the people of Cornwall, are broadcasted live on their YouTube channel.

The Cathedral Music Trust, established in 1956, works hard towards creating a vibrant choral music scene.

It paves the way for young and adult musicians across the UK and Ireland, with high-quality musicianship in cathedrals and churches through various training and programs.

As a self-funded body, the Truro Cathedral continues to sustain and develop its long-term strategic plan.
