Hundreds of people gathered at Helston’s Coronation Lake on Sunday to witness the resurrection of the town’s Water Carnival.

First held in 1912, when Lower Green was flooded to create the lake, the event has not been held for at least 50 years.

Having been postponed from Saturday, due to the poor weather forecast, Sunday afternoon saw blue skies and sunshine – justifying the organisers’ decision.

Behind the event are the team from Coronation Park and the Old Cattle Market, including Guy Watson.

He welcomed everyone to the event, which began with the Recycled Bottle Sailing Boat Race at 3pm.

This involved many dozens of homemade creations, built at home and in workshops, out of plastic milk cartons and drinks bottles, all with a paper sail.

These were launched into the boating lake with varying degrees of success, with Fleur Loomes the winner.

Soon afterwards the floats started entering the water for the Grand Parade.

All four of Helston’s schools created a float, with St Michael’s School named the winner.

There were also a number of community floats, won by Helston Theatre Company with an impressive train creation to promote their summer show The Railway Children.

In second place was the Museum of Cornwall Life with its ‘lifesaving’ float featuring Henry Trengrouse’s famous ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, and in third was Wendron School’s year 6 leavers, the ‘Pirates of Wendron’ featuring the faces of all the year group.

The Water Carnival was part of the larger Hellys: All Together Now event, much of which still took place on Saturday.

This included the South Kerrier Alliance and Pond Hoppers model boat group running a "make your own recycled bottle sailing boat" workshop for the Sunday race, the Museum of Cornish Life's Cornish Summer Fair and Helston Town Band’s annual event on Event's Square.
