Two local Helston teenagers are set to make waves at a prestigious American rowing camp later this month, thanks to the generous backing of two Helston organisations.
Cassie Pryor and Darcey Laurence, both 17, are currently studying for their A Levels at Helston Community College and have been dedicated members of the Greenbank Falmouth Rowing Club for the past four years.
Their hard work and talent have earned them a spot at a prestigious rowing camp held at the University of Washington, the same university featured in the film 'Boys in the Boats.'
The camp includes sessions on the water, strength and conditioning in the gym, nutrition sessions and a tour of the university which will benefit both the girls upon their return to Cornwall.
Darcey and Cassie hope that this trip will help them gain future opportunities and continue to empower females in sports.
“For us, it’s not just about rowing; it's about the opportunities it gives us from coming from a small town in Cornwall,” they said.
“It’s a great opportunity to gain independence and life skills by embarking on a new adventure which will help us in the future.
“Also, when we go to university, we will continue to row and use what we have learnt in that week from some of the top coaches in college rowing.
"We would like to say a huge thank you to Helston Downsland Charity and Helston Rotary. Your support has been amazing and we are very grateful for the financial assistance which will help us move forward in achieving our rowing goals."

With the trip just weeks away, Helston organisations have got behind the girls and have helped to support them financially.

The Rotary Club of Helston, The Downsland Charity and Mayor Miles Kenchington have supported the girls after their story was shared by Cornwall Councillor and Helston town councillor Mike Thomas.
“When I heard about Darcey’s planned trip to Washington Rowing, I wanted to introduce her story to a range of organisations in our town that support young people in achieving their goals,” Cllr Thomas told the Packet.
“I asked them to read about her plans and see if they could find the funds to help her small request to fund a device that will assist her rowing.”
Mike added: “I wish Darcey and her friend Cassie a very safe and enjoyable trip and I look forward to hearing it on her return.
“Mention must be made of her highly supportive parents – well done and thank you, everyone.”
