Drivers planning on heading out of Cornwall this afternoon are being advised to expect long delays on either side of the Tamar Bridge due to a ‘police-led incident’.

Traffic is at a standstill on the A38 Westbound at Tamar Bridge, with vehicles backed up for miles.

 The incident reported around 2.40pm today (Thursday), has resulted in one lane closure on the A38 Westbound, leading to significant congestion at Manadon Roundabout.

Drivers are advised to consider alternative routes, such as the A30, to avoid delays. The Tamar Crossing website has provided suggestions for alternate routes.

Traffic monitoring system Inrix reports: “Long delays and one lane closed due to police incident on A38 Westbound at Tamar Bridge. Congestion to Manadon Roundabout.”

Devon and Cornwall Police have now shared an update on the incident. 

A force spokesperson said: "Emergency services were called to the Tamar Bridge at 1.10pm following a report of concern for the welfare of a woman.

"It was reported that she was on the wrong side of the railings.

"She has since been brought to safety and is with police officers."
