A charity founded by a Cornwall vet is gearing up for an annual tuk tuk event.

The Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) will hold The Rabies Rally between September 10 and 13.

The event will see 11 teams take on a course across the Cornish peninsula in tuk tuks.

These three-wheeled vehicles are often seen during the charity's global vaccination projects.

The first Rabies Rally was held in 2023. The funds raised help support the charity's Mission Rabies project, aimed at eliminating rabies worldwide.

This initiative runs dog vaccination drives, surveillance, and community education in areas most affected by rabies, including India, Cambodia, Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique.

Dr Luke Gamble, a vet from Truro and founder and CEO of WVS, said: "Rabies still kills a child at least every nine minutes around the world and it is a horrifying disease.

"Rabies is primarily transmitted through dog bites, which means thousands of dogs are brutally culled and poisoned in countries where rabies remains endemic.

"Our projects show that rabies can be eliminated by large-scale vaccination campaigns – protecting both children and dogs in some of the poorest countries in the world.

"We hope this event will enable more people to get involved with supporting the charity and raise awareness about what we’re trying to do."

The participating teams will travel around the Cornish coast, scanning pin codes at checkpoints to find their next location.

They will complete challenges en route and receive finishers' medals at the final location.

The event's organiser Lucy Hastings, events manager at WVS, said: "The Rabies Rally is such a unique and fun event to get involved in.

"We had teams from as far away as Switzerland and the USA last year.

"It will be a fantastic group of people coming together and we would love more people to join us for this year’s event.

"Most importantly, by getting involved, you will help combat the deadly rabies virus, protecting people and animals worldwide."

There are only two team places left for the 2024 rally.
