People living in some areas of Penryn are being advised not to drink discoloured water coming out of their taps this morning which is brown or yellow.

South West Water says it is aware that last evening (August 1) some people had been getting discoloured water through their taps in the TR10 8RA post code.

The company says people should not be alarmed by the "unplanned interruption" in the supply centred on Treverbyn Rise.

It says the brown or yellow appearance is caused by the disturbance of natural sediments that can build up over time within the main.

It says people should not try and drink the water but run their cold kitchen taps until it run clear which could take up to an hour but if so people can claim money back.

It says discolouration is normally short lived following a burst or repairs to our network but it shouldn’t last beyond 24 hours.

"We’re aware some customers in the TR10 area are experiencing discolouration to their supplies, but please do not be alarmed," said South West Water.

"The brown or yellow appearance is caused by the disturbance of natural sediments that can build up over time within the main.

"These are generally associated with metals such as iron and manganese and whilst not harmful, due to its appearance we don’t recommend that you drink it.

"If you notice discolouration to your supply, please run the water from your cold kitchen tap until it clears. This could take up to an hour, but you could claim a run off allowance to re-pay you for any water lost."

The company says that anybody who needs any extra help because they have a medical condition that requires constant access to a water supply, or you would find it difficult to reach an alternative supply during a mains interruption, then they should sign up to its Priority Services Register which is free, and you don’t need to be the bill payer to register.
