More than 100 businesses in Cornwall have joined a council initiative to support breastfeeding women.

This scheme, named 'Breastfeeding Welcome', was launched by Cornwall Council last August during World Breastfeeding Week.

The aim is to encourage cafes, pubs, restaurants and other venues to display a special sticker, indicating their support for new mums who want to breastfeed.

Emma Redhead, of the Barley Sheaf in Truro, said: "We thought it was a really good idea to have a safe environment where women can feed their babies and don’t feel like they are going to be judged or looked at."

Emma Sims, of The Hair Boutique in Truro, agreed: "We signed up to the Breastfeeding Welcome scheme because it is something we’ve supported anyway.

"We are more than happy for new mums to come in with their babies, get their hair done and feel comfortable that they can come in and breastfeed as and when they need to."

The list will continue to be updated at www.cornwall.gov.uk/breastfeedingwelcome where you can find details of how to register your business.

Statistics reveal that although 90 per cent of parents in Cornwall aim to breastfeed their children, about a third of babies are not breastfed after six to eight weeks.

These numbers stem from various issues which could potentially be eased with adequate breastfeeding support.

Although it is legal for women to breastfeed in any public place, many new mums are said to feel uncomfortable doing so.

Other means of support by the council include extending peer groups into the school holidays and the recruitment of a new team of Infant Feeding Support Workers within the community.

Cllr Barbara Ellenbroek, a cabinet member for children and families at Cornwall Council, said: "The Breastfeeding Welcome scheme is a brilliant way for businesses and organisations to show that they support women who want to breastfeed and will help them feel more comfortable feeding their baby in their premises."

Ruth Fromow, Infant Feeding Lead at Cornwall Council, said: "I’m delighted that our Breastfeeding Welcome campaign has attracted so much support among the business community and I would urge any business that hasn’t yet signed up to do so and display a sticker."
