A popular live music bar in one of Cornwall’s tourist hotspots has announced it is to close at the end of the month.
The owners of Whiskers bar in Newquay, which has been rated one of TripAdvisor's top five nights out in Cornwall, revealed their decision on Facebook this week.
Nicole and Jonathan Grant – known to their friends and patrons as Nik and JG – said it was “mixed emotions” that they made the announcement, but added that their two young children must come first.
The business is already up for sale, with the couple now reducing the price in the hope of speeding up the process, but they said that regardless of this they would be closing the bar on August 31 and “this time it is a definite.”
Explaining their decision in more detail, Nik and JG said: “It is with mixed emotions that we announce Whiskers will be closing its doors for good on August 31st. We have said this before but this time it is a definite.
“Over the past ten years, we have cherished every moment with our amazing community, but as we've previously shared, balancing the demands of the business with raising our two young children has proven to be too challenging.
“Despite our efforts to adapt and think creatively, we have made the difficult decision to step back from owning our own business.”
Thanking customers for their support, the couple added: “We are deeply grateful for your unwavering support, friendship, and all the wonderful memories we've created together.
“Please support us during our final few weeks. If you are one of our original customers that can no longer stay out late then please come early! If you’re young and full of beans then stay all night!
“Your support during this time will make a huge difference.”
They also revealed plans for a big, final night performance on August 31 that they said would be “a night not to be missed.”
Customers have reacted with sadness to the news, with one saying: “Sorry to hear this, your venture has been amazing - thank you for this gift.”
Another said: “As an old codger (and previously a not so old codger) I've had some great nights with you that have made me feel almost young again. Thank you for the memories and all joy to you going forward.”
The business is up for sale with David Ball Agencies, which describes Whiskers as an award winning bar and live music venue in the heart of Newquay’s town centre.
The bar currently operates in the evenings, opening its doors at 8pm and closing at 2am, although the alcohol licence states that alcohol can be served from 9am and it is is also registered to prepare and sell hot food.
It is well known for its live music, open mic sessions, karaoke and DJ nights.
Whiskers is for sale with an ingoing cost of £79,000, plus £13,000 per annum rent.
