A festival-goer caught up in the middle of a crowd collapse at the Boardmasters festival in in Newquay described how she was “trampled” to the ground with two grown men falling on top of her.
Another told the Packet the experience was “truly frightening.”
It is after DJ Sammy Virji’s set on The Point stage on Friday evening had to be cancelled due to an incident now being described as a “crowd collapse.”

One festival attendee told the Packet: “There was a huge line of people who stood at the back of the Sammy Virji crowd and suddenly shoved everybody forward, and everybody was trampled.
“I was stepped on while laying on the floor, my cousins, my friends, my mum and my aunts were all literally stuck on the floor. We were all screaming out for help because it was so painful.
“People were actually standing on my legs, just to stand up.”
She said she managed to get pulled up from the ground by a man in front of her, but that people were “stampeding to leave the crowd” and “just shoving people to try and get out.”
“People were fighting and screaming. My aunt, who was just a few people next to me, had her head stood on top of. It snapped her nose to the side and there was blood everywhere. She was screaming.
“I was right in the middle, so deep in there. I had people who were literally just kneeling on top of me – one on my legs and one laying across my back, and I was laying flat on my chest. Having a full grown adult man slammed into you so hard, it completely knocked the wind out of me.
“Then that’s when the guy came and pulled me up and I just held onto him, because he was the only person standing, and I looked over at my cousins who were still on the floor,” she added.
After her mum was helped up her group tried to leave, but she said that’s when “the stampede started.”
She added: “I’m genuinely really shaken. It went from such good music and literally one minute until Sammy Virji came on, to getting shoved so hard I’m laying flat down on my chest unable to breathe and two fully grown men on various parts of my body.
“It was so scary.”
Another festival-goer contacted the Packet to say: “I was in the crowd waiting for Sammy Virji to perform and the crowd surge was one of the most terrifying things I have ever experienced.”
She described how “everyone piled on each other”, adding: “Someone fell on my chest in the surge and I couldn’t breathe, as well as having to pull up my friend to stop her from being trampled after I had managed to get up.
“There were people being carried out on people’s backs and lifted over the barriers. It was truly frightening.
“The stage they planned for Sammy Virji to perform on was far too small for the crowd he was going to attract and the medical tents appeared overwhelmed.”
Devon and Cornwall Police has confirmed that injured people were treated on-site by medical staff and “a small number” were taken to hospital to be checked over for what they described as “minor injuries.”
