A fisherman who was caught on dashcam driving the wrong way down a slip road on to the A30 in Cornwall, has narrowly avoided going to jail.

Adam West was confused by his sat-nav in his Mercedes car and drove the wrong way down the slip road at Scorrier, near Redruth, in May last year.

Truro Crown Court heard that 51 year old West then joined the A30 and undertook and overtook other vehicles as he weaved along the road.

He said he did not feel well and returned home and drank cider before falling asleep, the court heard. West has a drink drive conviction from 2013.

West, from Newlyn, admitted dangerous driving and was jailed for six months, suspended for two years, banned from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay £1,630 costs.

West, a married grandfather, who works between Falmouth and Brixham as a fisherman, said he did not know the area well and was confused and make a mistake.

Judge Simon Carr said the incident was 'truly frightening' and could have had 'catastrophic consequences' for other motorists and West himself.

He said the signage on the slip road 'could not be clearer and impossible to miss' and it would have been obvious he was going the wrong way.
