A Cornish female walking group are gearing up to take part in a mighty hike all in the name of raising money for charity.

The Muddy Maids walking group will be taking on the Cornwall Coast Hike Full Marathon on August 31, 2024, all in the name of raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The walking group, established by Nicole Wedlake, is a community of like-minded women who share a passion for the outdoors and supporting each other’s well-being.

Nicole’s personal connection to Macmillan inspired her to form the Muddy Maids team for the Mighty Hike. She said: “I have lost people close to me to cancer and would love to raise money to support people going through the same pain.

“I can’t wait to walk the marathon with these incredibly inspiring women. We got this!”

Another "Maid" eager to raise funds for Macmillan is Jess Beecher. Jess is participating in the hike as a heartfelt thank you to Macmillan for the care they provided to her father-in-law, Bruce, in 2022.

"I'm taking part in the Macmillan mighty hike with the muddy maids as a challenge for myself, whilst raising money for a wonderful charity that was involved with my father-in-law's care back in 2022," Jess said.

The group which walks weekly across the Cornish Coast to boost members' mental health has become increasingly popular over the past few months.

Nicole launched the group to meet like-minded women and to support women’s physical and mental health.

“Walking coastal paths has had a huge impact on my mental health, and I wanted to share this with others and to offer a safe space for women,” Nicole said.

“The joy, these women bring me every week is incredible and we always end up laughing uncontrollably on every walk.”

Heather MacNeil, a member of the Muddy Maids echoed Nicole’s sentiments about the group's impact. She said: “For me, the Muddy Maids has offered a welcoming space to meet like-minded women while enjoying the spectacular Cornish Coastline.

“It can be difficult as an adult to make friends outside of school and work, so having a welcoming space to meet people from all walks of life has been amazing for my wellbeing.”
