Love wasn’t the only thing being lifted at Hall for Cornwall’s Playhouse on Tuesday evening.
There was a sense of anticipation as a packed auditorium eagerly awaited the premiere of An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical.
For someone unfamiliar with the original film, the promise of men in crisp navy uniforms and the iconic 80s classic "Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong" was enough for me. However, the musical offered so much more.
The curtain rose, introducing us to Paula Pokrifki (played by Georgia Lennon) and Lynette Pomeroy (portrayed by Sinead Long), two women with big dreams united by their determination.
We then met Zack "Mayonnaise" Mayo (played by Luke Baker), Sid Worley (portrayed by Paul French), and the rest of the young officer candidates, all vying for success under the watchful eye of the forceful yet endearing Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley (played by Jamal Kane Crawford).
Foley's sharp wit and quotable lines, like the hilarious "stop eyeballing me boy," had me chuckling throughout the night and a line I will be using when my boys decide to give me some attitude!
The nostalgic 80s soundtrack was a treat, with "Hearts on Fire" (also featured in the classic film Rocky IV) proving a particular highlight for me - I couldn't resist singing along!
The musical featured familiar 80s hits like "Livin' on a Prayer," "Material Girl," and "I Am Woman," creating a nostalgic atmosphere in the audience.
The dynamic between Zack and Sid is reminiscent of the Maverick and Goose relationship in Top Gun, which made me happy as it’s another personal favourite movie of mine.
From the stunning live music and beautiful singing to the charmingly dated 80s outfits and big hair, An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical offers a lovely blend of entertainment and heart.
This show left me smiling, and maybe even a little bit misty-eyed.
The iconic end scene from the film, cleverly adapted for the stage, was also a very welcome sight for many in the audience.
As I left the auditorium, I couldn't help but say to my companion that I was sad it was over. It is a really incredible show. I loved it from start to finish.
I wholeheartedly recommend An Officer and a Gentleman: The Musical to anyone who loves 80s music, a cheesy love story – and men in white Navy suits!
