Yellow flood alerts have been issued for across Cornwall this evening, including on the south and north coasts as well as the Fal Estuary.

The Environment Agency has warned that flooding is possible over the evening high tides of today (Thursday, August 22) and tomorrow morning (Friday, August 23).

Areas such as Falmouth, Penryn, Mylor and the A39 at Perranarworthal are all at risk of flooding in low lying areas, as well as coastal areas such as Marazion, Porthleven harbour, Newlyn and Mousehole on the south coast, and St Ives Harbour, Portreath Harbour and the Causeway at Hayle on the north coast.

The government agency said: “Large waves and spray are likely so take care near the coast.

“Do not walk or drive through flood water or waves.

“We are monitoring the situation and will update this information by 12pm on Friday, August 23, or earlier if the situation changes.”

Below are the affected areas and the essential details:

Tidal Fal Estuary

High water at Falmouth is at 8.12pm on Thursday and 8.56pm on Friday. Times of high water will vary along the coast.

Force 5 south westerly winds are forecast to cause flooding of waterside locations and roads. 

Locations particularly at risk include low lying areas in Falmouth, Penryn, Flushing, Mylor Bridge, the A39 at Perranarworthal, Devoran, Calenick, Truro and the A390 at Tresillian.

The tidal gates at Flushing will be closed.

  • Thursday: Forecast high tide level at Falmouth is 2.65m AOD. 
  • Friday: Forecast high tide level at Falmouth is 2.48m AOD. 

Expect tide levels along to coast to be between 0.11m - 0.13m above tide table level.

Flood alert area: Tidal Fal Estuary at Falmouth, Penryn, Flushing, Perranarworthal, Truro and Tresillian.

South Cornwall Coast from Land’s End to Lizard Point

High water at Newlyn is at 7.30pm and times of high water will vary along the coast.

Force 4 south westerly winds and offshore wave heights of over 2.7m are forecast to cause wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal areas.

Locations particularly at risk include Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance, Longrock, Marazion, Praa Sands and Porthleven harbour.

  • The forecast high tide level at Newlyn is 3.03m AOD. Expect tide levels along the coast to be around 0.11m - 0.13m above the tide table level.

Flood alert area: Lands End to Lizard Point including Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance, Longrock, Marazion, Praa Sands and Porthleven.

South Cornwall coast from Lizard Point to Gribbin Head excluding the Tidal Fal Estuary

High water at Falmouth is at 8.12pm, times of high water will vary along the coast.

Force 5 south westerly winds and offshore wave heights of over 1.7m are forecast to cause wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal areas.

Locations particularly at risk include low lying areas along the tidal river Helford and exposed coastal locations including Portmellon seafront, Mevagissey Harbour area, and Portholland.

  • The forecast high tide level at Falmouth is 2.65m AOD. Expect tide levels along the coast to be around 0.11m - 0.13m above the tide table level.

Flood alert area: Lizard Point to Gribbin Head including Coverack, the tidal Helford Estuary, Falmouth, St Mawes, Gorran Haven, Portmellon, Mevagissey, Pentewan and Par.

South Cornwall coast from Gribbin Head to Rame Head

High water at Plymouth is at 8.43pm, times of high water will vary along the coast.

Force 5 south westerly winds and offshore wave heights of over 1.7m are forecast to cause wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations.

The forecast high tide level at Plymouth is 2.86m AOD.

  • Expect tide levels along to coast to be between 0.11m - 0.13m above tide table level.

Flood alert area: Gribbin Head to Rame Head including Fowey, Golant, Lostwithiel, Lerryn, Polruan, Polperro, Looe and the Looe Rivers and Seaton.

North Cornwall coast from Land’s End to Chapel Porth

High water at St Ives is at 8pm, times of high water will vary along the coast.

Force 5 south westerly winds and offshore wave heights of 2.7m are forecast to cause wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations including St Ives Harbour, Portreath Harbour and the Causeway at Hayle.

  • The forecast high tide level at St Ives is 3.92m AOD. Expect tide levels along the coast to be around 0.12m - 0.16m above the tide table level.

Flood alert area: Lands End to Chapel Porth including Sennen, St Ives, Carbis Bay, Lelant, Hayle, Portreath and Porthtowan.

North Cornwall coast from The Rumps to Hartland Point

Flooding is possible over the morning high tide on Friday, August 23.

High water at Padstow is at 8.33am, times of high water will vary along the coast.

Force 5 north westerly winds and offshore wave heights of 4m are forecast to cause wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations including low-lying areas of Port Quinn, Port Isaac, Port Gaverne, Boscastle Harbour, Crooklets and The Strand and The Crescent in Bude.

  • The forecast high tide level at Padstow is 4.02m AOD. Expect tide levels along the coast to be around 0.13m - 0.16m above the tide table level.

Flood alert area: The Rumps to Hartland Point including Port Quinn, Port Isaac, Port Gaverne, Bude, Crooklets and Boscastle.
