There is only one day left to get your hands on McDonald’s latest limited edition Grimace Shake that has taken the country by storm, with many branches reported as regularly selling out.
However, all is not lost if you missed out - here’s how you can make your own replica once it’s off the menu.
The famous Grimace Shake is a berry-flavoured milkshake that was launched in the United States in June 2023 to celebrate the 52nd birthday of the Grimace - a character who was a part of McDonaldland.
The milkshake gained popularity on TikTok and YouTube with the hashtag Grimace Shake trend, and the jingle, ‘Happy Birthday Grimace’.
Last month, McDonald’s UK announced it would be introducing the Grimace Shakes to its menu, but for a limited time only, and today (Tuesdsay, September 3) is the final day it will be available.
Many restaurants sold out of the shakes within hours, due to popular demand.
Now that there is only one day left to purchase the berry-flavoured phenomenon, trend experts WeThrift have shared their ingredients and methods for making a Grimace Shake replica at home.
Recipe to recreate the McDonald's Grimace Shake replica at home
Ingredients:
150g Vanilla ice cream
240mls Milk or plant-based alternative
100g Frozen blueberries
60g Strawberries [frozen or fresh]
1/2tsp Vanilla extract
UHT Spray cream [optional]
Rainbow sprinkles [optional]
Method:
Combine the ice cream, milk, frozen blueberries, strawberries, and vanilla extract into a blender. Blend until smooth and uniform in colour.
Taste your milkshake; if it requires more sweetness, it would be best to add some more ice cream. If it requires a more vibrant colour, add some more frozen blueberries.
Pour the shake into two glasses, top with whipped cream and sprinkles, and serve immediately.
Note: It is essential to use frozen blueberries as they are the key ingredient to achieving a vibrant purple colour. This is achieved when blueberries are frozen immediately from harvest, which enhances the properties of anthocyanins, the compound responsible for their purple colour.
Thoughts on the real McDonald's Grimace Shake by a seven and nine-year-old
My seven-year-old son, Jenson, has been counting down the days, obsessed with the "Happy Birthday Grimace" jingle that's been playing on repeat.
He even tried to make his own version, a concoction that his older brother, Nico, described as tasting like "gone-off cheese." Thankfully we can now try an actual recipe this weekend.
With the announcement that the Grimace Shake would be sold in McDonald's across the UK and in Cornwall this summer, Jenson’s dream of tasting the shake for the first time became a reality.
Off Jenson went, ready for this exciting time in his life; Nico was also keen to try this legendary milkshake.
Once they had returned from their trip, my son Nico came in and the first thing he said was: “I found it very disgusting - it tasted like a vanilla milkshake.
“It had a horrid aftertaste like blueberries and raspberries.”
Meanwhile, Jenson comes bounding in with a massive cheesy gappy grin on his face, with his milkshake in hand.
Jenson said: “This is amazing mum; it’s so good.
“Look at the colours of it, it tastes like blueberries.”
With that Jenson took a sip of his last bit of shake, leaving a lovely purple milkshake moustache.
