A historic pub in Truro which closed its doors suddenly in July has reopened with many familiar faces returning – including a former head chef.
The Wig and Pen in Truro closed its doors after former owners Tom and Lara Trubshaw announced the difficult decision, citing the ongoing challenges of running a pub in the current economic climate.
However, last week, the pub in suddenly announced on its Instagram page that it was reopening this month under new management.
A soft opening on Monday, September 2 was declared an unqualified success with a full opening taking place today (Tuesday, September 3).
A post on the pub’s Instagram page said they were blown away by the turnout on Monday.
“We were absolutely blown away with the turn-out yesterday!” they said. “Thank you to everyone that made an appearance, shared a laugh and more importantly showed support. It was lovely seeing familiar faces and some new ones.”
Adding: “We look forward to doing it all again today from 12 ‘til late.”
Manager Brandon Griffiths told the Packet that they had bought back all the former staff, including him, who had lost their jobs when the pub had closed down in July.
The lease on the building had been taken over by two business partners and former staff, including former head chef Ben Peters, had returned to the building as well as assistant manager Moses Lawley.
“The opening went very, very well,” Brandon told the Packet. “People were happy to see us back open, it was really lovely.”
He said they had managed to bring back all the staff to the pub which had made it so special in the first place.
The re-opening was welcomed by many people on Instagram with Vicky Beresford saying: “Glad to see some familiar faces, was nice to have our local back, thank you. Was great to enjoy a glass of vino congrats guys.”
The pub which has been situated in the heart of Truro for over 200 years is just down from Truro Crown Court and has been the local hang out for judges barristers, solicitors and court staff for decades.
However over the past few years it has struggled and has had a number of different owners prior to the takeover by the Trubshaw’s following an 18-month closure.
The historic pub reopened in March 2022 under Tom and Lara's management.

They lovingly restored the Wig & Pen, originally built as two villas circa 1830, back to its former character beloved by Truro residents in the 1980s and 90s.
They completely revamped the building but high tax rates, energy bills, and other continually rising costs left them with no alternative but to the close the pub in July this year.
The new owners promise to use local produce and ingredients from Cornish businesses to showcase what the Duchy has to offer.
