Cornwall is facing a double of heavy rainfall this week, as the Met Office issues two yellow weather warnings for the region.

The first warning begins at 9pm tonight (Wednesday, September 4) and continues until 11.45pm tomorrow, while the second kicks in at midnight on Friday and is expected to last for 24 hours.

Forecasters are predicting torrential downpours across the Duchy and South West, with some areas expecting up to 100mm of rainfall by tomorrow afternoon.

Bodmin, according to local radar, is braced for 29 hours of continuous rain starting at 11am tomorrow and lasting until 4pm on Friday.

The Impacts:

The heavy rainfall is expected to cause significant disruption across the region, with the Met Office warning of:

Difficult driving conditions and potential road closures due to spray and sudden flooding.

Flooding in home and businesses, potentially causing damage to buildings.

Fast-flowing or deep floodwater in some areas.

Delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

What to Do:

The Met Office advises residents and visitors to take the following precautions:

Check if your location is at risk of flash flooding and prepare a flood plan and an emergency flood kit if necessary.

Monitor road conditions before travelling and consider amending your travel plans if necessary.

Stay updated on the weather forecast and be prepared for potential changes to the warnings.

The warnings:

While not all areas will be affected, the Met Office warns that scattered showers on Wednesday night are expected to merge into longer spells of heavy, possibly thundery rain overnight and through Thursday. Where heavy downpours occur, 20-40 mm of rain is possible within an hour or two.

Over a longer period, some areas could see more than 50-60 mm of rain, potentially reaching 80 to 100 mm if repeated batches of heavy rain affect the same locations – this is more likely during the second half of Thursday.

The heavy rain is also expected to cause travel disruption and flooding across southern England and southern Wales on Friday, with a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.

With the potential for significant disruption, residents and visitors to Cornwall are urged to be prepared and stay informed about the latest weather warnings and advice.
