A former bank in Falmouth town centre could be turned into a shop with flats above.

Applicant D R Properties Ltd has submitted plans to convert the former NatWest bank in Falmouth town centre into a shop with seven apartments above.

The site comprises a three-storey commercial building that sits mid-terrace on the north east side of Market Street.

Historically a pair of buildings, over time they have been amalgamated, extended and altered.

The applicant is applying for full planning permission to convert and extend the building, retaining a commercial unit on the ground floor with storage within the basement.

On the upper floors and within a second floor extension, they would create five two-bed apartments and two one-person studio flats.

A new contemporary-style shopfront would be installed and on the left side of the shopfront there would be a new door, if approved, that would serve as a communal entrance to the upper floor apartments.

The rear section of the building would be extended vertically to provide the accommodation, with new windows and sliding doors providing access onto balconies.

Each of the apartments would be provided with a dedicated cycle space within a store on the ground floor.

NatWest announced in June 2022 that it would be closing its branch in Falmouth that summer because of the way people had changed their banking habits.

Announcing the closure of branches all over the country, it said the Falmouth branch would shut on August 24, 2022, adding that the company had seen an increased demand for mobile and online services.
